Is it good to rattle when idle? What is causing a constant rattling sound from engine at idle? Can a timing belt cause rattling when accelerating? Why does my car rattle when I idle?
If your engine has low oil pressure, engine rattling at idle might be present when the engine gets hot. It’s because the oil is thinner and doesn’t coat parts as well. Low oil pressure usually means a complete engine job.
Either a replacement engine or an engine rebuild – either way, it’s going to cost you big money. If your car engine is making a rattling noise on startup, idle or when accelerating you could have a faulty serpentine belt tensioner, a loose bolt on the mounting bracket, loose timing belt, rusty or broken flexplate, faulty harmonic balancer, loose fan blade, engine knock (pinging) or low levels of engine oil. Then, Most likely you’re probably experiencing spark knock.
There are several causes for the engine to rattle while idling. With your car, the heat shield or an under engine shield is most likely. The other causes are the AC compressor clutch, idler pulley, or belt tensioner.
Up made this noise when the engine was idling and the car was in neutral. Rattling noise when idle. While it did initially give concern, I never. Low transmission fluid level could the source of the rattling sound when accelerating.
A bad torque converter could be the origin of rattling sound when accelerating at low speed. It will be a faint sound when the car is idling in ‘park’ mode, but the volume and frequency will increase in proportion to acceleration. D estate in for service today. Just been waiting for the right opportunity and cash to buy the bits and get them changed.
The noise can’t be heard inside the cabin and can only heard outside. The noise also only appears when it is warmed (engine running for about - minutes after cold start). Discussion Starter.
Other sources of rattle can be quite serious, and you may hear even hear it at idle from the engine bay. Don’t confuse excessive rocker arm chatter for a harmless rattle. If the rattling noise sounds like it is coming from either side of the engine, near the top, you just might have some work to do. The engine makes a relatively loud (clearly audible), slow, rough rattle.
The sound is most noticeable at idle, and can best be heard by listening from the front air intake with the hood down. When you raise the rpm, the valve closes and the mechanical rattling noise faints. It has something to do with the emissions.
You can buy a set of metal plates that can replace those valves. Over time, the nylon chain guides wear and the tensioners can’t manage the slack in the chain or belt. You hear a rattling noise made by the chain or belt whipping aroun untensione inside the timing chain cover. This noise rises and falls with the engine RPMs.
Solution: Replacement of the hydraulic tensioners and the chain guides is necessary. If you have a timing belt, check it for wear and replace it if you are near the prescribed replacement interval. When in neutral with clutch out, no noise. Clutch in (whether in gear or not) rattling noise.
Also the idle is prefectly steady when col warming up and when hot. The only change is that the rattling noise gets louder when the engine is hotter! The only symptom that seems to be the same as the vanos problem is that the noise is coming from the front of the engine where the drive belts are located.
From outside the van on idle I can hear a rattling noise seems to be coming from the front area of the engine. When reved up this seems to go away. Anyone else come across this?
I have driven for a while. Or worse after the oil heats up and thins the motor is making the sound ? It does not appear to get louder with higher RPMs (e.g., as vehicle is moving).
