Elton reservoir swimming

Open Water Swimming at Elton Sailing Club is run by Bolton Tri Club volunteers. We are insured by Triathlon England as the Tuesday swim is classed as a club session. TE are not permitting any club sessions until 30th June at least.


On top of this Elton reservoir has been partially drained to enable tests and inspections on the reservoir wall. Elton Reservoir Notice: This is a directory of supervised and commercially operated open water venues.


It is advised to contact the venue that you plan to swim at prior to arrival to ensure that the venue is open and operating swimming.

You can swim anytime between and pm. The reservoir is now full to the brim and the sailing club has new showers. A suspected bloom of blue-green algae in the Reservoir has been reported. Swallowing the water or algal scum can cause stomach upsets or more serious health effects.


Contact with the water or with algal scum can cause skin or eye problems.

We currently have swim courses – a 400m loop and a 100m warm-up lane. There are very real dangers associated with reservoir dams and towers. The dam has spillways where water is sometimes released to fall to the downstream river, or where a full reservoir overflows. The tower is normally close to the dam, and contains the pipes that take water off for use, whether that’s to be processed for drinking or for hydro-electric power.


A summer-long series of open water swimming sessions at Sywell Country Park offers the chance to swim in a safe and controlled environment. The vast West Reservoir is a hidden gem in Hackney. With acres of water, there are two courses — a 400m loop and a 100m warm-up lane — which have re-opened for experienced swimmers only.


Swims are every Wednesday and Saturday all summer. Currently we are open every day offering 400m and 100m loops.
