Brake judder under light braking

Brake judder is the vibration felt through the steering wheel and suspension when the brakes are applied at certain speeds and pressures. It can vary from a barely noticeable vibration to a violent judder – experienced either through the brake pedal or steering wheel. Judder is one the most annoying faults that can occur with braking systems, and if a customer comes in complaining about it, you can be sure they definitely want a cure.

This refers to the uneven wear of brake discs and is the result of rotor run out. We have tried heavy braking to test the ABS and it seems to work as it should.


Under heavy braking, the ABS kicks in normally when the wheels are starting to lock up. It only seems to occur under normal light braking. There are no warning lights on the dash.


I initially thought dead pads or warped discs would be the culprit but braking is 100% at higher speeds. At lower speeds, brake pedal pulsing on braking gently. Yesterday, pedal going right down on braking, needing a couple of pumps to work. Also NEVER STOP as you will leave a pad imprint on the disk surface - this is a life rule, not just for bedding in sessions - never sit at the lights with your foot on the brakes, if you braked hard and the brakes are hot.

The pad imprint will cause brake judder that is often misdiagnosed as warped disks. Brake judder can also be the result of binding or seized calipers which will often be cleared temporarily because the "sticky" piston is pushed back in to fit the new pads and also by worn.


Warped Brake Discs Typically, brake juddering is a sign that the brake discs have become warped. Although excessive and hard braking can cause early brake warping, it is something that occurs naturally over time with everyday use.

Normally, a replacement set of brake discs will cure the issue, stopping brake juddering in its tracks. The juddering you feel is the abs system working because it thinks a wheel has locked up, when the light is on the abs is inactive, hence no juddering. If the light is on then a fault code will have been store diagnostics will point to which wheel sensor is the problem, hopefully a wirebrush and a clean will be all thats needed.


And I could swear it is coming from my rear left drum. History: have had the Mini for about years now. So I replaced front pads and discs for brembo stuff.


Drove fine for around 500miles and it started again, it happens at speeds above 40mph, light to medium braking but fully disappears if you really stamp on the brakes. Apart toy the brake disks are manufactured to two parts, which seems odd.
