Rs 400 sailing tips

Prior to stepping the mast in the boat, ensure all halyards are “lowered” so that you can reach them when the mast is vertical. Lift the mast into the boat, locating the heel tenon in the step on the cockpit floor. Sailing an RS4upwind fast is a largely about maintaining the correct balance between power, pointing, and maintaining wind flow over the sails, as well as water flow over the foils (centreboard and rudder).

If I were heeled – I should trim the mainsail and or sit in or sit out. Note to self – it is time to add some more packing to the front of the rudder to give us more encouragement to keep the boat flat. Pre Tack Trim – flat and fast.

And for the recor right now, having done only garda and two bloody marys in the last years in the 400. The last few weeks have been unprecedented for RS Sailing.


In the light winds on Saturday, we won both races – then got a lesson in upwind and downwind sailing on the Sunday in big breezes. Reflecting back – we felt we had pace upwin but none at all downwind. I resolved to put the spreaders out to 405mm.
