Japanese hornet

They prefer to live in low mountains and forests, while almost completely avoiding plains and high-altitude climates. The Japanese hornet is easily identified with the naked eye. Not only is it larger than other hornets, but it has a distinctive black, brown, yellow and orange coloring.

It has five eyes in total: three small “ocelli eyes” at the top of the head and two large “compound eyes” on either side. It is smaller than our native hornet, with queens measuring up to 30mm, and workers up to 25mm in length.

In France, it has consumed large numbers of bees, including the well-known European honey bee and many lesser-known solitary and colonial bee species. What is the name of the Japanese hornet? What does a Japanese giant hornet look like?

Newly-mated queens hibernate during the winter, and emerge in spring to begin building a nest. They lay eggs that hatch into sterile female workers who take over nest building and collecting food for the developing larvae. Later in the summer males and fertile females hatch.

These mate and the females become next year’s queens.
