Ploughing match ireland

What is the history of Irish ploughing? When did ploughing start in Ireland?

Fellowship, craic, camaraderie were all there in abundance and added to the competition made for a great day out. The match was part of a two day ploughing weeken the first ever in Northern Ireland and with Kircubbin Portaferry and District Match on Sunday the whole event was a roaring success.


At the NPA’s award winner’s banquet earlier today, Sunday, October 1 the association announced that the annual three-day event will be returning to Ballintrane, Fenagh, Co. Over 1ploughing plots, all carefully measured and numbered. The marquee with its four huge sections for homecraft, members, rural craft and beer tent. The car parks, all carefuly plotted out and ring fenced.


With competitions in horse and tractor (both vintage and modern) ploughing, produce (from vegetables to eggs), photography and painting, our coverage is extremely diverse. It is not just for the farming community although it is (of course) a wonderful celebration of agriculture. One word of advice is. The event was cancelled due to the impact of the COVID-pandemic in the Republic of Ireland.

Nominally a contest pitting the skills of international ploughmen against each other it is also a massive trade show, with livestock and machinery exhibitions, trade stalls, craft stalls, vintage motors and even fashion shows, home entertainment, interior design.

There has always been strong competition among those who plough to be considered the best in their field and some of the ploughing match societies in Britain are a century old. Rescheduled due to Covid-19.


This year’s match is a British National Vintage Qualifier. Wright Engineering at world specialists in making attachments and accessories for competition ploughs. All Ireland ploughing match, every year I’m at. With raincoat, stick an’ wellies an’ I don’t forget me hat.


A trudging through the gutter, the crowds an’ the muck. Everyone is happy ‘cos where there’s muck, there’s luck. Me homeplace now in Ireland, is in a Garryhill.


We always had great ploughmen an’ begore we have them still. This amazing event is held in a different part of the country each year. Entry fees remain at £for members and now £for non members. These games see modern machines up against Shire horses in an amusingly quirky day of countryside fun.


Each competitor ploughs their allocated area.
