Knocking sound when braking front

Car gives knocking noise from front during braking. Why is there a knocking noise when I brake? Is it normal to make noises when braking? Worn out tie rod ends can cause the front wheels to shake or wobble and emit a hard knocking sound when brakes are applie especially while driving at high speeds.

Worn suspension parts can also be a cause of a knocking sound when braking. The "lower control arm" bushings can wear to the point of actually tearing apart, and then the whole front wheel assembly can move back and forth when you brake and accelerate.

This will cause knocking when you brake and go over certain bumps. If you lost a ring while doing the brakes there will be nothing to centre the wheel and it could move slightly. This might cause a clicking sound with each revolution like you describe. The noise seemed to be coming from the right front wheel area and I could slightly feel it through the steering wheel.

The slower I went, the slower the noise. It happened about four or five times and then just went away. There are a number of other noises that a car can make only when braking at low speeds. Maybe there is a “wooshing” noise coming from the brake rotors or backing plate.

A rusty backing plate (the shield that protects the brake rotor from the elements) can become deformed and rub against the brake rotor, creating a noise. A few times I have noticed a knocking noise when descending steep hills and applying the brakes gently to remain within the speed limit.

I have also been able to reproduce on the flat with a couple emergency stops causing the knocking sound to continue briefly but dissipate with normal driving. For last last couple of months, I have noticed a knock or pop sound when braking. It usually starts after I have been driving for a while and usually when stopping from slow speeds. This started after reaching 60k miles.

Check the lug nuts on the front wheels and make sure that they are tight. The wheel could be loose and moving around.

If the lug nuts are tight, then check around the wheel and see if there is anything that could be making the wheel come in contact with it. Most brake noise complaints are squeak-related or metal-on-metal are related to the brake pad.

The grinding noise is the result of worn pads contacting the rotor and is a common problem. The least common noise is a knocking sound. It is just one time during pressing of the brake.

If I slow some, then let up and then continue braking, it happens again. Brake Squeaking Solution. Maybe there’s a “squeaking” or “clunk” noise from a worn suspension component.

I have today had new drop links fitted to the car and I noticed that on the way home I still have this clunking noise. This causes a horrendous knocking under heavy braking, until the brakes have been worked sufficiently to wear away the ridge of corrosion on the disc. What else could it be? My Z7has been like this since new.

I’ve taken it to two separate garages and none of the mechanics can find something wrong with my car. The noise comes from the front left of the car, and sometimes sounds like it comes from the front middle. Steering Rack Noise.

If you suspect your steering rack is causing a knocking noise while driving on uneven road surfaces here is one way to check for play in the steering rack end bushings. Jack up the front of your vehicle and support it under the frame with jack stands. Some people says it could be the wheel bearing, but some think it's the rotors. The knocking sound does not occur while driving, but only breaking.

I just got my rotors re-surfaced and my breaks work without any problems (not warped). The noise only happened when slowing down to a stop or just crawling speed more prevelant braking on steep hills, it makes the noise to the rotation of the wheel. It is much better with the new discs and pads but probably will get worse in time i would imagine. If this sound is coming from front you could jack the front of the car up and try and generate the sound with a friend.

You could even run the wheels a bit and then hit the brakes to see if you can. I have a knocking noise coming from under the front of the car, that only happens when braking, with hard or soft braking.
