De havilland heron still flying

It was designed as a rugge conventional low-wing monoplane with tricycle undercarriage that could be used on regional and commuter routes. A total of 1were built, and it was also exported to about countries.


Here’s an interesting sight. I had noticed something a bit out of the ordinary in one of the hangers at this small airport, but today it was outside completing some engine tests.


It’s a de Haviland DH.

Heron, and this one is the only flying Heron left. And to top that off, it was once the Queen of England’s personal transport. Initial flying was carried out with a tailplane having no dihedral, this being replaced by a dihedral unit after some 1hours of test flying. A third type, the DH114- can be emulated by making the landing gear inoperable.


World War II, the lot of them proving something of a mixed bag. It did not enter military service, but became the first stage of Europa, a launch vehicle for use in space flight.

Built of non-strategic materials (i.e. wood), it was designed for speed and range as a two-seat unarmed light bomber, unarmed reconnaissance aircraft and long range fighter. You can see from the wear and tear that this airliner has flown a lot. Dove aircraft were delivered to the RAF for communication duties as the Devon C. Royal Navy as the Sea Devon C. It has been downloaded times by fellow modelers from around the world.


Especially with an expansion of the Prinair story andalso the final operations of the aircraft commercially in the Pacific and Australia. IIRC, these aircraft had been re-engined with HO engines, for which I believe there was an American STC. Anyway, it was quite something to see both the Heron and the Dove in pax service in Ohio.


A bit off topic, but there were also two small airlines, Tag and Wright, which operated Doves across the lake to Michigan cities. Havilland DHMosquito Prototype. This was the first flying school opened by a Municipal Council.


It incorporated many parts from the Dove, but additional power to cope with the extra load which its stretched fuselage could accomodate was provided by four engines instead of two. The picture was taken from the waiting lounge at the Airport.

The airline later became Northeast Airlines, which later became part of B-E-A which is now British Airways. IX G-ALYI Scrapped.


Had to be fixed undercarriage and washed down after every Barra flight because of salt water. Adopting the same philosophy that had produced the highly successful fourengined D. I remember flying in a Heron from St Thomas to St Croix in the Virgin Islands. It had flat engines out there so had been re-engined. It was a smooth ride compared to some of the types I flew on down there.


One odd thing I seem to remember is the emergency hatches were in the ceiling. Is my memory right? We have DEHAVILLAND Aircraft For Sale. Tauranga City Airport - NZTG, New Zealand.


Of the 7planes built, survive today, four of which are airworthy. A number still fly today giving pleasure flights and appearing at air shows around the world. Rotorua Airlines then leased these aircraft to the newly reformed Air North.


Shortly after this restructuring, ZK-EJM went into a ditch at Ardmore and was irreparably damaged.
